Tether has pulled the plug. The world's largest stablecoin issuer announced, Tether ends stablecoin issuance CNH₮, its offshore Chinese yuan-pegged token. No new tokens will be minted from this point forward.
The decision came straight from Tether's official announcement. Low adoption. Weak sustained demand. Those were the reasons given. CNH₮ simply never gained the traction Tether needed to justify keeping it running.

One Year. That's What Holders Have Left
The shutdown runs in two phases. Minting stops now. Redemptions will remain open for exactly one year from the announcement date. Tether confirmed a separate reminder notice will go out before that deadline hits.
Holders across all supported blockchains are being urged to redeem as soon as possible. Waiting is a risk. The window closes and it closes permanently.
Tether's statement was direct about it: usage levels for CNH₮ did not justify the operational cost of maintaining it to their internal standards. The company applies the same bar across all products, and CNH₮ could not clear it.

What Tether Is Actually Focused On Now
This is not just a product cut. Tether is reshaping where it puts resources. The company says it will push deeper into core stablecoin liquidity, tokenization infrastructure, and new financial tools for global users.
The CNH₮ shutdown follows a pattern. Tether has done this before with other tokens that failed to build real community traction. Low interest forces the hand every time.
Regulators have been watching stablecoin issuers closely. This kind of proactive product management may signal something broader for the industry too, not just for Tether.

The crypto market is shifting fast. Regulatory pressure is mounting globally, and the Russian crypto crackdown threatening Bybit and OKX access is just one sign of how quickly things can change.
Tether holds significant reserves, the company has been transparent about those figures. But trimming underperforming tokens keeps the operation tight and defensible. That is the calculation being made here.
CNH₮ holders do not have unlimited time. The redemption window is clear. One year from today, that door closes.
