Vitalik Wants Ethereum to Protect Freedom. Not Finance.

Vitalik Buterin is not happy with where Ethereum stands. Not technically. The concern is deeper than that. He published a sprawling post on X laying out something few expected from crypto's most prominent builder.
The world is getting worse for freedom. That's his starting point. Government surveillance, corporate overreach, AI risks, social media chaos. Buterin named each one directly. And Ethereum, he said in the on X, has been doing almost nothing about it.

Ethereum Keeps Missing the Bigger War
According to Vitalik Buterin, on X, the gap between what Ethereum could be and what it actually delivers has been weighing heavily on his mind and on those of the community's most idealistic builders. He pointed to Starlink, Signal, open-weight local AI models, and Community Notes as the technologies genuinely doing something about freedom. Ethereum was not on that list.
He's not bothered by memecoins on Solana. Gambling apps on fast chains. None of that. What bothers him is that through years of real political and corporate overreach, Ethereum sat on the sidelines.
Buterin did not call for Ethereum to become a political movement. That framing, he made clear, would be wrong. Ethereum cannot fix the world. That path leads toward centralized power projection. That's not the goal.

The Sanctuary Tech Vision No One Saw Coming
What Buterin proposed instead is the concept of "sanctuary technologies." Free, open-source tools that let people communicate, manage money, build wealth, and organize together without depending on any single controlling authority. The idea is not to remake everything. It's to reduce total victory for whoever wins the current struggle for power.
He called it "de-totalization." Preventing any one winner from having complete control. Preventing any loser from being completely destroyed. Digital islands of stability, as he put it, for a chaotic era.
Ethereum's specific role in this, per his post, is to create shared digital space with no owner. Not a communications channel. Something more permanent. Objects that can represent social arrangements that change over time. Money is one. Multi-signature wallets that persist beyond any single person or key. Governance structures.

Full Stack. Privacy. AI as Interface.
As Vitalik Buterin posted on X, Ethereum should not try to be Apple or Google. Not a tech sector efficiency play. The community should build downward toward hardware, operating systems, and even physical security layers. And upward toward wallets, applications, and AI as an interface layer.
The people he wants to target are not general crypto users. He wants users for whom sanctuary tech is the only thing that actually serves them. Users that centralized platforms will never prioritize.
Finance stays in the picture. Financial freedom matters. But Buterin made clear it cannot carry all of the weight alone.

The post arrives at a moment when Ethereum has faced repeated questions about relevance and direction. ETF inflows returned. Prices recovered. But Buterin's message cuts past market performance entirely. The conversation he wants is about what Ethereum is actually for.
Ethereum has allies outside of crypto, he wrote. It's time to work with them.
